"Flight to Athens is cancelled", “Karpaty” were stopped at the foot”. Such kind of headlines one could see in lviv newspapers after second match of Cup Winners Cup 1993/94 “Shelbourne” – “Karpaty”. We have the possibility to present you fragments of one of six games in UEFA competitions our favorite team has ever played.

«Shelbourne»: Burn, Flood, Bready, Nevel, Welan, Dooline, Mooney, Costello, Dally (Izzi, 58), О’Doherty, Raserford.
«Karpaty»: Strontsitskyi, Yevtushok, Chyzhevskyi, Mazur, Mokrytskyi, Petryk, Pokladok, Kardash (Y.Shuliatytskyi, 81), Riznyk, Plotko, Stelmakh (Rafalchuk, 46).
Goals: Costello (11), Mooney (58), Izzi (78), Riznyk (86).

Myron Markevych, coach of “Karpaty”, leveled his team at keeping the own goal clear during first 20 minutes. After that they should have start own aggression using long passes for Kardash. But the plan failed on 11th minute. Costello made the first “Shelbourne’s” shot on target and achieved result. The ball rebounded from Mokrytskyi rolled near stunned goalkeeper into the goal.
What can I tell about “Shelbourne”? The team is the second in Irish league after 3 matchdays passed. It is not a high-class team, playing quite straightforward football. But it seems if Irish players know something about football, so they now it perfectly. Good impression was made by long diagonal passes on Flood’s coming, and then – his strong shots for O’Doherty and Dally who were near far post.
Lviv footballers leveled the situation on the pitch only after they established short passes. But it was very rarely. Other instruments for changing game “green-whites” didn’t find.
On the 68th minute Mooney took the long shot and Strontsitskyi wasn’t ready. 2:0 and the feeling that everything is over for Ukrainian team appeared for the first time. This goal misbalanced “Karpaty’s” game. Plotko, Kardash and Riznyk couldn’t find their game. Rafalchuk also turned off his power. And “Shelbourne” was impossible to be stopped. Yong Izzy, who was loaned from “Lazio”, scored the third goal, leaving behind lviv defense using Croatian forward’s Bokśić style.
The “prestige” goal “Karpaty” scored on the last minutes. Burn didn’t afford to keep the ball after Mokrytskyi’s free kick, and Riznyk was first on a ball.
“Shelbourne’s” qualifying to the next round is logical. But of course, it is pity that “Karpaty” were relegated by a semi-professional club.
Tomorrow “Karpaty” will play in Lutsk in next matchday of Ukrainian league.
